Gmail

I got a Gmail account today. Everybody else has one, so why shouldn't I? Of course, picking a name that hasn't already been taken was a challenge. The "ringmaster" account was taken, and I really don't care to use my real name as an email address. I spent some time putting in some names that I've used for email in the past, along with some new ones.

  • "Reorx"- My XBox gamertag, but too short.
  • "Charon"-From my BBS days, but taken.
  • "s247lo"-From my BBS days, but impossible for anyone else to remember.
  • "Kushiel"-Not taken, but the mythology is too small.
  • "dissonance"-Not taken, but hard to hear the spelling when spoken.

In the end, I chose something clever for my epithet. I'm sure that with a little thought you can guess what it is, since it's probably the most clever word in this post that I could have used.

This Gmail address won't replace the normal email accounts. I'm not exactly sure why I wanted one. Maybe for info highway cred? You have to admit, the email address is cool.

d00d, seriously, Gmail accounts are soooo last month.

Seriously though, what is the allure of a Gmail account to someone like yourself who has many cool domains of their own for e-mail addresses?

In a few months, everyone will be able to a Gmail address how cool will it be then? A notch above Yahoo!? Wow. You'd think that Gmail accounts came with free iPods the way people are clamoring for invites and considering them to be status symbols.

Well if that's the way you feel, then you'll see none of my invites... :)

I think it's mostly a status thing. You have to admit that the namespaces of Yahoo and Hotmail are pretty cluttered. You'd be hard pressed to find an email address at either of those places that is an actual single word. When Gmail goes public and everyone who wants to use it scrambles for a name, I'll have a word as an account name instead of "owenw43@gmail.com".

Another couple things: Gmail.com is pretty short in its own right, so that's more attractive. Google is cool than Yahoo and Hotmail. It also ties into my AdWords and Google Answers accounts, which is convenient. I guess.

But you're right. I have cool domains and have my pick of cool accounts, so why bother? I guess it's so that when someone asks me, "Do you have a Gmail account yet?" I can say, "Yes. And I 0wn j00."

Any chance of spreading the love with a Gmail invite? I've been trying to snag one for a while now but haven't had the luck yet.

Thanks for the comparison chart - I had already switched to WordPress myself but it was nice to compare versions.
