Jump in. Here's the first new plugin I've released in a while. It's a simple one and it only works on WordPress 1.6.
This plugin removes most (maybe all) of the client-side dynamic admin cruft that has been added to WordPress between versions 1.5 and 1.6. Don't get me wrong, I find some of it useful, but there are folks who are feelin' just fine with the admin interface as-is in 1.5 and might become confused with all the extra controls. So if you don't want the extra javascript stuff, then install and activate the Admin Revert plugin.
What does it do exactly?Things that are disabled after this plugin is activated include:
- The WYSIWYG editor
- The fading-in error/warning/confirmation messages
- The collapsible panels on the Write page
- Ajax-based link and post deletion
Other things might be disabled by removing those giant chunks of javascript, but presumably the basic failover functionality is still there for any function, simply because we can't be sure that every browser has the options enabled to perform these functions.
Of course, this is version 0.1, and the WordPress version that it works on is still in alpha. If there are other features that should be disabled or changed, please leave a comment, and I'll see about adding them in, too.
One thing that I might consider is the nefarious "Save and Continue Editing" change. And at that point, I'll have to build an options page just to store all the settings... Ah, the project gets bigger...
Heh. I did the least work possible that would still produce the results. This would just function as a baseline to work from for something more complete.
Of course if I read the entire post, it might help... In any case, I'd love to see the options page added! :)
Cool idea. I'll have to take a look at the code when I get a minute and see what brilliant ways you came up with to kill this stuff.
How about a new admin panel letting you select the stuff to kill? I know I'd love to kill the fading error messages - they just get on my nerves for some reason - but the rest I'm happy with. Got any plans to improve on this?
Nice idea. I'm keeping it in mind, since I have the feeling that things won't be always nicely degradable on MSIE with some strict security settings
(no need of Firefox advocacy, thanks)
I think people sometimes forget that the browser or OS that other people use are often things that are out of their control. If the plugin is useful for users of IE with higher security settings, then it actually has a practical application besides and aesthetic one, and that makes me happier to know it than if I hadn't.
I'm not brave enough to be running the bleeding edge tech - so I'm not on 1.6 yet. However, I will definitely be saving this one for implementation when I do. At home, not an issue. Where I work though, we're on 5 year old computers (that were far from the top of the line 5 years ago) that whine and moan whenever I run anything more than our cash register program. I'm betting that the js in the new WP will contribute to the pain these poor computers feel when I'm trying to do anything else. (And I do use WP for actual work related type thingst too. :) )
I'm telling you all this cause I want to make sure you know there are people out here who will need something like this! So, thanks before I even have a chance to try it. :)
Great work Owen!
I like this idea. I am a new Wordpress user and have only one public site so far.
My client is wondering how to set it up so that basic users dont have to worry about any of the admin stuff -- basicly, no admin panel at all except their profile. He wants them to be able to register, edit their own info and post comments and thats it. He wants them to automatically go back to viewing the site when they login as well, only get the admin panel when they click on the Admin link.
I am still poking around at the abundance of docs to try and learn.

Just had to install this to get round the one thing in the new interface that's been annoying me. Love being able to move the boxes around, so the ones I use more frequently can be at the top of the page. But I hate the size of the categories box. I don't want to have to scroll in there. With this plugin, and one small CSS change, I can see all my categories.
Now if those boxes could just be resized....
