Insidious Sinus

The squeamish may want to skip my gruesome detailing of this morning's events. Just warning you now that this post isn't the usual whimsical philosophical riddle.

I haven't had much of a will to do anything lately, mostly because I have once again come down with the dreaded sinus infection.

I keep telling Berta that I should have my sinuses removed, but a sinus is actually a body cavity, meaning that it's an empty space. And how do you remove an empty space? Pack it with chewing gum, I suppose.

This morning at around 5:55, just before the 6am alarm usually goes off, I woke up to what I thought was a runny nose. Oh, great. I rubbed my nose with my hand to "check for leakage". And in the half-lit bedroom, I noticed that the liquid on my hand was a bit darker than I expected.

By the time I got to the bathroom to effectively deal with the issue, both hands were covered in blood. I looked like I just got finished stabbing someone to death.

I have to say this is the first time this has happened. Usually it's just a little bit of bloody snot, if that. Usually it's just the cold medicine that causes it. Today, I'm wondering how much blood I swallowed while I was sleeping.

I always had my suspicions, but I am now fairly certain that the sight of large quantities of my own blood isn't something I'm going to need to worry about. That is to say, I need not worry about freaking out over the blood itself. The feeling is more one of, "Oh, look, lots of blood. Great." Years of gory movies have desensitized me, I guess.

Maybe I was just tired. Perhaps I would have freaked out more if I was more awake.

  1. What is it about this weather that drives the sinuses insane? Must be the dry heat. That could definitely explain your nosebleed. I'm expecting my annual sinus infection within the next few weeks. I'm trying to fight it off with saline spray and sudafed, but I don't know if I'll be successful. Anyway, good luck, feel better, and maybe consider investing a rubber pillowcase? You know, in case the deluge of blood happens again.

  2. awwwww :(
I feel myself quite close to the bloody nose as well. Though I don't think I've actually had one since I was pregnant and really I am not looking forward to another one, but I can feel it coming. Blah....

  3. I've had that happen before. It's never really pleasant to wake up in a puddle of your own blood, even if it IS just a nose bleed. I think it's caused mostly by the lack of humidity.

I have a friend who had some surgery to prevent the frequent nosebleeds she'd get... AFAIK it worked.

Make sure you get everything into the washer ASAP... it's a sure way to ruin a good pillow. Many things claim to clean blood stains (kinda scary, now that I think about it), but I don't think they work that well if the blood has managed to dry.

  4. I had the sinus surgery AND the deviated septum surgery and was among the smartest things I've ever done. I was getting multiple sinus infections every winter and at least one monster one in the summer. However, the processes leading them are scary - I had to endure multiple "nasal endoscopies" (i.e. - having huge amounts of tubing shoved thru your nose up to your nasal cavity for the Doc to view your sinus cavities) thru the diagnostic process - I preferred the surgeries to the endoscopies - heck, still have nightmares about them.

The doctor says I have a deviated septum. Have had a bloody nose for 6 days. He cauterized it and stuck padding up one nostril. I have thought as of yesterday that its a sinus infection. Do you smoke?

  6. Oh, i meant to say i'm on my fourth antibiotic.

  7. I have been sick now for almost 2 month's, i am on my third antibiotic. At first i was told i had a sinus infection, and ear infection in both ear's, then supposedly the sinus infection was gone, and i was left with very swollen lymph node's in both side's of my neck. Swollen gland's isn't something new for me,this is a pretty constant thing, and i am sooo tired and cold all the time, i fall asleep watching tv, which has never happened to me.I just had bloodwork done, and i have very low blood, so now i'm taking iron pill's and a muti vitamin. My nose is alway's bleeding, especially when i blow it, i feel like i want to get a knitting needle and dig out whatever is wayyy up there.Bloodwork ruled out Mono, so now i'm being referred to an E.N.T doctor. When i think about it, every winter for the past few year's, i have this problem with my nose, and soreness and bleeding.Right now my gland's are still very swollen, my throat is raw, i feel like i want to tear my nose off, i'm freezing and achy, and sleepy. Can anyone give me their opinion's...i would really appreciate it!!!!
    Thank's
