Volant Fitness in Downingtown and My Gym Membership Cancellation Problems

I used to think that Volant Fitness in Downingtown was a great investment in a home-town gym, but as it turns out, they're just another of the myriad of money-grubbing impersonal fitness corporations earning their keep off the forgetfulness of their auto-debited members.

Admittedly, it's been quite a while since I've visited Volant Fitness. Since April, when we started seriously thinking of moving, I haven't had any time for that, not that I was a very regular visitor before then. But I did call to cancel my account because it was a $50 monthly drain down which my money poured.

My call to Volant was a bit odd. They told me that the person responsible for cancelling accounts was not there. I assumed this was necessary so that they can convince you to keep paying for nothing, but at a lower rate. More likely, it was a ploy to keep me unable to cancel so I would continue to have the fees drafted from my credit card. I left a message in the general manager's voicemail, and in the turmoil of moving preparations I never noticed that he didn't return the call.

I would see the charges from Volant gym on my bank statement periodically during this period, and sometimes call them to try to cancel. Each time, there was no manager available.

Finally yesterday, I figured I would visit the gym itself to cancel my membership. They couldn't deny me if I was standing in front of them, could they? Yes, they could.

Continues here →

Once again, I was told that the manager that handled cancellations wasn't available. But at least he told me when the guy would be back in - today.

So today I drove back through Downingtown to the gym to cancel my membership with Volant's manager. But he was in a meeting, so the same guy I talked to yesterday who couldn't handle it became "authorized" to do it.

As he looked up my account, he noted that I was a month behind on my membership dues. I was a month behind on the membership I haven't used in a year, that I wouldn't use because I've moved, and that I've tried to cancel more than once. Moreover, there would be no cancellation until my account was up to date. They would continue to charge me for additional months on an account that I've told them in person that I have no intention of ever using again.

Plus, next month's charge would be applied tonight.

I asked, in light of all of these circumstances, that Volant simply forego the charges for this last month, cancel my membership, and let everyone go on their way. Appealing to human decency is a tactic that I'm not above when it's merited. But no, that didn't sway him either.

When the general manager finally surfaced, he was just as rigid as his previously authorized agent. He felt that Volant was entitled to my money for providing the service, regarless of whether I had used it. Nevermind that I had tried to cancel it prior to then, and could not do so due to his unavailability, and that I would not have used it and did not use it during that time.

I suppose that this whole scenario should have been what I expected. Why would I expect personal service from a company that survives solely on the premise that people don't make use of their memberships? After all, they tried to sell me the services of a personal trainer in the guise of a "1-hour gym tour" when I first signed up. So much for small town service in Downingtown, even for long-time members in otherwise good standing.

The gym itself is fine, and although I'm sure they've raised their rates since I signed up at their opening, they have a good deal. If you feel comfortable dealing with folks who consider five years of membership meaningless, then I suggest you check them out.

  1. What was the final outcome of this? Did you get your money back?

  2. Nope. I was screwed.

  3. I am currently trying to cancel my membership right now with Volant. I'll find out tonight if I'll sick some "word weasels" on them.

  4. I had the exact same experience with Volant last year. My credit card company finally advised me to send a certified letter asking to terminate the membership since this would prove that my request was received and would verify the date. I would not recommend this "hometown" gym to anyone.

I am the new general manager of Volant Fitness and first off would like to say what happend to you "totally sucks". The way you were treated was uncalled for. I have years of experience running clubs and would never treat a member like that ( 1yr or 10yr member). I have allready changed alot with the staff and club here and am getting back to that home town feeling. I do not want your experience with Volant to further leave a bad tast in your mouth. If I can recompensate you in some way for this please call me here at the club. This message goes out to all that have been hurt in the past by bad managment. 610-518-7680
    I care!
    Thank you

  6. Did anyone follow up with this off er from the "new " manager? I am curious becasue I was thinking of joining.. but with all the negative feedback..

  7. I have been trying to cancell my membership for over a month now for my wife and I. I spoke with someone last month and they told me that after Jan 15th, I would never be billed again. Well they billed me today! I was ok with their response to my issue......till I saw this BLOG. We will see what happens when (IF) they call me back tommorow.

  8. I'm trying to cancel my membership and I've been on and off hold for about 15 minutes. I'm sure I'll get the same treatment that you received. My wife cancelled her membership 3 months ago and they've still been charging us.

My daughter Taylor is one of the newer massage therapist at Volante. Although she runs her own show and is not a paid staff memeber I have heard nothing but awesome things about the staff, manager, personal trainers and I would hope that Downingtown would see that the Volant staff is willing and eager to make their gym and fitness experience a positive one.
    All the best,
    Rebecca Fay

  10. I should clarify that the people that work in the gym were always courteous and professional. It's the management staff (during the time when I was trying to cancel) and general operations of the gym that raised my ire.

  11. Your story is pretty typical of any gym. I have belonged to a number of gyms and everyone makes it impossible to cancel. I have learned when it comes to gyms pay upfront for a certain term and do NOT get involved with credit card payments.

  12. I had the same experience too, plus more. The showers were very dirty and whenever I questioned about when they would be cleaned I was told the cleaners were here after your left yesterday. I knew a trainer that had over a dozens paying clients he wanted to bring into Volant and the Manager would not even return his calls after the interview. He was bringing in over $4000 a month in personal training. Who would pass that up? He just needed a facility to use and was willing to split the money with Volant. I never saw their trainers doing anything but folding towels, making shakes and taking inventory. The facility has great potential but management was terrible when I was a member. The members were great. It's a shame because I live in Downingtown and now drive 20 miles each way just to go to a gym.

  13. I have recently joined Volant and, after a rocky start, have been fairly pleased with their customer service (although I have not yet tried to cancel my membership). In response to MB (above), the facility is now extremely clean and well cared for. There are occasional problems with the equipment, but they seem to be fixed quickly. All in all, it seems like it has improved a lot in the last months and they seem responsive to complaints as long as they are made in the right way to the right people.

  14. I too was once a member of Volant, have been since the very first owner, but not anymore. I have just terminated my membership so we will see if I have the same problems. In response to S the gym is filthy, and half the machines have been broken for quite some time. Any body that ever worked there that knew anything about fitness is now gone due to thier management or lack thereof. It was once a very nice place, with nice people and great service.
Now it is now filled with the most uncourteous people you will ever want to meet. Foul mouthed, smoking, and with no answers to any questions. As for membership dues, find 2 people paying the same rates. Good Luck!

  15. Looking for a new Gym

Thanks for the advice! I recently moved to Downingtown and was interested in this gym until reading this blog. Sounds like you guys saved me a lot of time and money.

  16. My wife and I recently joined Volant. So far all is well. The place is clean, all machines in working order, and you can't beat how nice the staff is. They did give us the hour personal trainer tour. That to me was expected. It's basically a free sample of services with the hope of you signing up. I told the trainer no and he remained very proffesional and still talks with me frequently in the gym. Although I have not cancelled the membership If i decide to I plan on paying cash for the last couple of months and have them cancel the credit card payments while I am still an active member.

  17. Member of Volant

Volant has come along way. From what I hear it is now under new management and he and his wife are nothing but nice. They started a new juice bar with A TON of new smoothies and protein shakes. I mean they have EVERYTHING! The staff are so friendly, and the place is very clean. The new manager has definitely made this place spectacular. Oh and the classes are fantastic! New instructors and they are getting new flooring for the rooms. All of the equipment has been fixed (they now have all three stair masters working again!! whoo hoo) I know they are remodeling the place .. moving things around. Just give them another month or so and this place is going to be on fire!

  18. Yay, new juice bar!

    Wait. What?

  19. Volant is not clean, they have arrogant staff members, they have a lot of machines but they are old and many are in disrepair. They give you a hard time when you want to cancel. They have recently started a new marketing blitz, but it's all smoke and mirrors. Their claims are overblown. Tow weeks free and a bad gym is not worth anything. Once I checked other clubs in the immediate area, I was much more impressed.

  20. Volant Fitness is a premier fitness center if a memeber signs and agrees to a 1 year membership it is a contract and people need to realize that, if you buy a car and decide you do not want it after you have it for a while you must abide by the contract you signed your foolishness does not allow you to post inaccurate information, other than you are a loser

  21. js you are an a-hole and a liar

  22. I am the owner of Club Volant and I do agree that prior to my takeover of this club (1/15/08) the club was in disarray, but I have put over 40K into this club, hired a full time cleaning staff, fired the staff that were just sucking money from the club and I invite any one to come to my club and see that Club Volant is the best club in the area, to any one who wants cancel a membership, when you join a club you are signing a 1 year membership that does not entitle you to cancel prior to that 1 year, you have made an obligation and you need to abide by the membership, as far as me not being available that is a down right out lie. I am at my club over 14 hours a day, and available to handle any questions,

  23. It's worthwhile to point out that the "jr" above (including several comments that I didn't approve) is the same person who posted as "Rob" with the cell number.

Feel free to draw whatever conclusions you like about his gym's service from that.

  24. disappointed

I am trying to cancel my membership with Volant. I've been called crazy in doing so thanks to Rob. Rob has several different ways to cancel the membership on the contract. I personally like the 10 days and your refund, haha such a joke. I personally believe that the gym is dirty. Of course the staff has to be nice to you people because it is their job. I have talked to some of the staff members there and they are not happy with the new management. So to those who do go there good luck...

  25. At first I really like this place. I went, worked out, and everything pretty much went pretty smooth. Then we had to cancel because we moved a fair distance from the club. First I just want to say they should consider dropping the word “health” from their marketing standpoint. Any kind of business that causes this much stress, which causes poor health as we all know, when canceling a membership is just not worth it! Since joining I have heard about people that had trouble canceling their memberships for 6 months and even more in some cases. Our situation is currently not that bad but should a customer in good financial standings ever have to beg for a company to cancel their fees and not take money from them?! This company is ridiculous and they are just thieves masquerading in fitness gear. I would highly not recommend this place at all! All they wanted to do is talk about sending us back money that they stole from us and nothing has been done yet. Oh and this whole new owner/management thing is bs! We are currently a few days away from being in the month of may and this guy said he took over the place months ago!? STAY AWAY!

  26. I actually do see many changes since the new ownership has taken over. They have increased their classes and the teachers are awesome. I also see a difference in the cleanliness and overall equipment. I am mcuh happier than I was 1 year ago. I have belonged to other gyms and the policy is the same...no cancellations (unless injury w/doc note) until the contract is up!

  27. It's a gym. Work-out.

    All this is a wash.

How else is a gym supposed to turn a profit people.

Its called the way of the world. Everyone wants your money.

    Get used to it.

  28. "How else is a gym supposed to turn a profit people."

By charging members for the service that they use. By charging more to the members who use the service more, instead of charging people who don't use the service.

To the point: By being honest.

  29. I just tried to cancel my membership-- I joined when it was Downingtown Fitness -- so they kept trying to tell me it was in my contract, that I had to provide a 'written' cancellation, that an email would work -- but they dont't have an email address -- so tomorrow I will tell my credit card that I dispute the charges and will hand them a 'sticky' with the cancellation -- absolutely unbelievable customer service

  30. disheartened

I would advise anyone not to join Volant. I was offered my first month free if I joined on the first day of my trial period. I did not want to make a hasty decision before I knew anything about the gym so I did not join that night. After the trial period was over, myself and two of my friends were going to join (based on my good word about the gym). I emailed to ask about the free month and was told that I couldn't get it because I needed to do it the first day of my trial period. I don't think it is fair to ask anyone to make an uninformed decision and making one that day would have been. Unfortunately, they lost 3 memberships by their rudeness and ludicrous business offers. Perhaps, they should learn a little bit about customer service! And if an offer is made at the point of sale, that should be at the point of sale and not a trial period.

  31. During the time that I worked at the gym, there were lots of people that had trouble trying to cancel their membership. And to respond to previous posts... there were a few machines that were beaten up, and some were broken the majority of the time.

  32. Fitness Guruz

Gyms are gyms. They will always try to upsell you on services or "automatically renew your subscription'= they have so many tricks. Be firm, stubborn and make them aware that the costumer is always right!

  33. Most of the staff were very nice. The equipement was decent. Yes, there were a few pieces in disrepair but overall ok. I didn't have any problems until I sent in a complaint. If "Rob" is the owner, then don't bother to complain. Just leave if you don't like the place. He's very rude. Re-read "JR"'s blog on 2-20-08. THIS will be the type of reply that you'll get. I am cancelling my membership and I started with a certified letter. I am not playing around. If my credit card is charged I will dispute the charges.

  34. I've been a memeber their for about 2 years. Just before the new management came in. In like most parts of the gym. I mean it's a gym. If your reading this thi Rob for all the money you have put into the gym little things are starting to break and go unchecked. The bench in the suan has been broken for 2-3 months now. If your gonna take the hand wipes out for the machines fine but put more spary bottles and towels up. You have done a very nice job upgrading the club but it's the little things that keep memebrs! Oh and I find the gym bathrooms to be very clean. I don't always find the gym to be clean but that is usually because of memebers not fallowing the rules and cleaning their machines off when done.

  35. Objective Opinion

I'm looking for a new gym and stumbled across this site. From the perpective of an objective outsider, I can clearly see that the gym does have some problems but also that some customers are confused about what a contract really is.

-If you sign a contract for a specific amount of time, you are bound to pay that contract. If you choose to waste your money by not going to the gym during the contract period, that is your fault, not the gym's.

-If the contract indicates that the customer may cancel, it is the gym's responsibility to promptly cancel, without hassles, run-around (ie: no one is here to help you with that) or continued billings after the customer has cancelled. That type of behavior is irresponsible at best and sleazy at worst.

-When people join a gym, they expect the equipment to be in working order most of the time. A conscientious gym will maintain the equipment and swiftly repair any items that break.

All people really want is a clean gym with good operating hours, plenty of functional equipment, and a staff who is available and helpful. Um...shakes and smoothies? Not so much. Is that really so difficult? I'm still looking for a good gym in or near Downingtown. After reading this thread, I am EXTREMELY reluctant to invest in Volant. Anyone have any other feedback? Anyone know what Planet Fitness' reputation is?

  36. To clarify, I didn't have any delusions about needing to adhere to the contract terms or having to pay when I didn't make use of the gym sevices.

Still, I was very disappointed in their execution of that contract, specifically in that they would continue to milk me for money for a service I would not and could not use after repeated attempts to cancel, with utter disregard for the human aspect of the situation and five years' as a member in good standing.

It's a shame. Being courteous once could have saved them a lot of grief.

  37. A member who understands what a contract is

A contract is a contract, deal with it. You signed a year commitment and if you wanted to cancel early, you pay the fee. Just like any other business.

  38. Yes, you are a member who understands what a contract is, but not one who actually read what I wrote. My contract required length had run out long before I tried to cancel.

  39. What a Joke

Volant or 360 express or whatever the club's name is this month is a JOKE!!! the owners are a bunch of thieves, liars, and have ZERO knowledge how to run a fitness club, then they put a chick in charge who is really good at sliding down her poles for pole dancing and that's it!!!!! Thank God for Planet Fitness and Gold's in Exton, I am taking bets Volant or whatever the name of the club is will not be open much past Jan 2009, anyone want to bet with me????

  40. How would you know this Ted? Do you personally know that they are stealing from the club? I think you are making unrealistic assumptions. Why not go to the club and check it out instead of bashing on it.

oh and wait? What month is it? Oh, February. You lose.

  41. I've always hated the auto-debit gym memberships. I have three memberships. I pay for each at the beginning of the year and pay in full. It's much cheaper. You have some room to negotiate when paying up front. The best has always been Bally at about $100.00 per year.

  42. Had same experience and Rob threatened my husband to a fight out in the parking lot. This all happened last year.

The guys there now are great, but Rob was a rud S.O.B.

We finally by the advice of our bank had him arrested on bank fraud.

  43. I have always been curious about this gym since it's close to work and close to my babysitter. I stumbled upon this site today and learned that it's now 360 fitness. I am close to Planet Fitness as well. But after reading a lot of negative reviews, I have decided that I am going to go with Planet Fitness instead. It's a shame because our company just moved to Exton and we were looking for a gym that would offer corporate rates, but being in the customer service industry, I would rather be with a company that values that.
