Having an uncommon name is a blessing and a curse. I like my name, which is interesting because there are many people who do not. I do not recall the exact numbers, but there as a large percentage of people in a recent Wii poll who did not like their own name.

What's nice about an uncommon name is that you don't get confused with other people. It's very easy to request "owen@somedomain.com" instead of the lousy "o.winkler@somedomain.com" because there aren't many Owens to request the address. You don't have to postfix the uncommon name with a last initial for disambiguation.

The downside is outweighed by the upside, but it's still there. Sometimes you need to spell your uncommon name for people that don't recognize it. "No, it's o-w-E-n." And the worst is when someone else nearby shares your uncommon name, and someone calls it, because you aren't used to hearing your name used to refer to anyone but you. It's confusing.

There was a girl in my junior high named Ellen who had a locker down the hall from me. This caused me endless confusion at the end of the day when people would yell her name over the din of post-school hallway chatter and I would mistake it for my own.

And that's where I'm at with name commonality today. Over the last 10 years, the name Owen has become increasingly more common. In 1991, it was the 465th most popular baby name. In 2005, it's the 60th. In the year I was born, 0.02% of all male babies in the US were named Owen.

I think Owen as a name is even more common these days in our area. There were two kids at Chick-fil-a the other day named Owen. Their parents were amused that they would call their child from the little play area and both would come running. I was not amused every time they called my name, usually in a fit of, "Owen, stop throwing your food."

Of course, I stopped immediately.

I have the same problem :) My name has been spelled a myriad of ways including, but not limited to: Valarie, Valaria, Valeri, Valery, Valory, Valorie, Vallery, Valeree, and Valire. Honestly, I'm surprised how many people can't spell it. One of my high school diplomas reads "Valarie." However, I don't think it's as uncommon as a name as Owen. I'm very lucky if I can get valerie@somedomain... I'm still sad I couldn't get that as my Flickr...

I never met another Amanda until I was in 9th grade. She had the same first and last name as me. During the late 80s and 90s, Dynasty and Melrose Place made the name popular. Much like you, I was being yelled at to stop climbing on the shelves at supermarkets and to wipe my mouth at restaurants.

Try living with the name Tacie -- I was given my name at birth and have lived with being called everything under the sun for 30 yrs now and people are still ignorant at telling me how I don't have a proper name and how I should change it....there are days when I wish I could tell them off. Having a different name is nice at times because it makes you unique and you are not often confused with someone else whom has a common name....but there are definately downsides to it as well. The government screwed up my name in grade nine 3 times when issueing my SIN number ~ crazy! And for those who are wondering -- yes, my parents intended to spell my name T-A-C-I-E

Hi, Tacie! I'm another Tacie and twice your age. Let me tell you, it doesn't get any better. People still think I don't know how to spell my own name (they love to spell it "Tracie"), and over the phone people invariably think I'm saying "Casey." I've taken to spelling it out for people: "T as in Tom, A, C, I, E." And they STILL get it wrong! I was named after the Tacie Lee candy company in Dayton, Ohio where I was born. How did your parents happen to name you Tacie?

Lol, it's crazy that i stumbled across this website..the funny thing is the other Valerie that left a comment, well, she left a way to spell her name out because as you see, mine is VALARI. Which everyone gets wrong...all the time. lol, they always want to spell it like her name, VALERIE. Which in understandable i suppose. But another thing is my last name is OWEN. lol..what a coincidence huh?! But yes, it is Owen annd it's a fairly common last name i believe. I've heard it a lot..along with Owens. Which a lot of people also try to put an S on the end to make it Owens..but anyway, i just thought it was a lil ironic but thats all i have for now =)
