Asymptomatic

I've had so much to say over the past two weeks, and no desire at all to write about any of it. It seems like I should do a dictation or something, and have my secretary write out my blog posts for me. Perhaps I will look into a service soon -- I've always thought that my blog entries would sound better if I read them instead of writing them. In any case, here's a brief summary of topics of things that I should have written about but didn't.

I got a shave two weeks ago - a real one in a barber's chair with a straight razor. I actually did write about this, but I wasn't near the internet when I did it, and I'm not sure where my notebook is at the moment. I'm sure that post will appear when I finally stumble across the notebook bag.

On that same day, I attended the PhillyCHI design slam. It was an interesting event in which we were broken up into small random groups and given the task to create a "table management system" for a fictional restaurant. Our group didn't do very well primarily because there was no cohesion between our members. We had some pretty good ideas, but they weren't realized because everyone wanted to go separate directions. Kind of stupid, really....

Man, this week has been difficult. We've had a few server issues with work clients, and I've been playing around with my own servers, and it's just been a mess that I'm hoping will be in the past come next week. But I've learned some lessons, and I figure I might as well pass them on because people are apparently still buying hosting from really bad places.

What do I need? This is the most basic question you need to start asking yourself before you even hunt for hosts. Having some idea of your demands, both from a technical perspective and a logistical perspective can save you some pain in the future. Here are some really basic considerations:

Shared/VPS/Dedicated -- What level of hosting you choose will depend on the types of service you intend to run and the affordability of storage space. Shared hosting is for small, single, low-traffic installations, like a single blog or a low-traffic forum. VPS hosting allows you to interact with the server configuration directly, to host more complex applications and more of them. Dedicated hosting gives you full control over what runs on your system, plus often includes dedicated storage that is many times what you'd get from the other options. But there are more things to consider....

I took Nana and Riley out to lunch today, something I'm thinking of making a regular Thursday outing. Today we went to Cheeburger Cheeburger (note the surprising lack of "s") in Frazer, and had some yummy burgers. Nana said she hasn't had such a good burger in years, and I learned that she likes mayonnaise and fried onions on her burgers.

After we sat, a group of ladies came in and sat at the table behind me. I don't know if it was just one of them, or the whole group, but the terribly overpowering odor of baby powder slammed into my nostrils. It was so powerful, I nearly gagged and I could occasionally (depending on wind shift) barely taste my food.

I'm not sure what it is that possesses some people to odorify themselves like this. I mean, you might do this if you absolutely had to cover some other less attractive odor, but by all means, take care of that problem before slathering yourself with some other more powerful odor. I really don't see how that helps the problem, and I can only imagine what I wasn't smelling underneath all of the overlying stink....

I'll just say it plainly -- today sucked.

It started last night after the kids got home from Trick-or-Treat. I was reassembling my computer, which I had to take apart partially to hook the projector to my notebook. See, I was projecting a Halloween sign onto our garage door that told the kids to go up the street for candy. Perhaps I'll explain that more later. In any case, I was reassembling things when I noticed that, unrelated to my reassembly, my center monitor's backlight seemed to have blown out. This makes it exceptionally hard to log in.

It's kind of a strange puzzle. The center monitor is the only one on DVI, and the side monitors are both VGA-only. This might have been fine if I had a DVI to VGA adapter, but there were none to be found. So, it was time to order a new monitor, and with me being off to take care of Riley while Nana was on vacation, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to visit Best Buy and get that upgrade I've been considering. I've been trying to have my 401k from my old employer transferred into a new tax-deferred "vehicle". I finally managed to get all of the paperwork handled, and sent it all away to be processed. Recently I received a notice that there was a certified letter to pick up at the post office.

Digressing into my first annoyance- I am home all day, pretty much every day, because I work from home. Please, Ms. Postwoman, knock on my door instead of filling out one of those stupid little pink cards and making me trek to the postoffice, which is way off yonder toward Yellow Springs, aka "nowhere". Anyway...

So today I picked up the certified letter, which was sent from my old employer. Inside is a check with a post-it note affixed to it: "Don't know why sent here." The check was the value of my emptied 401k: $146,061.96...
