Abbyana Jones and the DVD of Doom

On a whim and a wish to watch something with the kids that was not yet another animated film (not that I dislike them, but they seem all that the kids will tolerate in entirely) I threw in a copy of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I'm not sure I expected them to really watch the whole thing, but being that Indiana Jones was a favorite of mine over the years, I had hoped they would enjoy it as much as I do. As it turns out, my hopes have come true.

Tonight when we were out to dinner, I suggested to Abby that we pop some corn and watch another Indiana Jones movie. Her eyes flew wide open in shock, as she was surprised to learn that there was another movie!

I was only too happy to put Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade into the player to watch. We've been nibbling popcorn and watching Indy chase down the holy grail now for a little while, and I'm happy to report that the movie has her rapt attention....

Collaborative Coding Technicalities

I work on several projects, both for work and for recreation, that require code editing by more than one person at a time. Some projects I've created on my own, while others were well established long before I came upon them. There are common threads between them, and I would like to try to point out some things that I've learned along the way.

When working collaboratively, a source code control system is mandatory. There is simply no other way in my mind to efficiently collaborate on a project of any size without source code management.

One might think that code control is not necessary for collaborating on small projects, but for those smaller projects it is especially true. If a project consists of a single file, and two people are working on that file, the only way to make the changes not continuously conflict with one another is to use some form of code control. The alternative of sending back and forth changes or keeping in constant contact to ask if another person is editing a file you need is not practical....

What's On?

Nothing. Or, not much. Today. Soon there should be plenty of things on TV with which I can empty my brain. But what will the fall TV season offer me? Let's take a look at some of the returning shows that I will be watching this year once again...

Gilmore Girls - The first couple of seasons had good rapport between the Girls, and the middle entries played on breaking that, and the most recent seasons were enjoyable if a bit less whimsical. I'm sticking with it because I like the dialogue, but I hear that the original creators are not going to be with the show this season, so I wonder if that witty banter will continue. Remember what happened to West Wing when Aaron Sorkin left.

Veronica Mars - The first season kicked butt. I think I expected too much greatness form the second season, but I still wasn't disappointed with it. Third season should see Veronica attending college in Neptune, which will hopefully bring a bit of new blood into the mix and make the big mystery more mysterious.

House - I didn't watch this show when it was on TV. But I downloaded an episode or two, got addicted, and then downloaded both seasons to watch non-stop to the end. The first two episodes of the fall season have already aired, and they keep the same attitude as the first two seasons. House, incidentally, is one of the few shows on TV made up of self-contained episodes that doesn't suck. more

Stargate SG-1 Cancelled?

This posting requires a huge preface and will still end up causing all sorts of heckling of me by my friends, but yet I think I still need to post it.

No. I do not like the move "Stargate". I think that the movie as it stands alone had the best potential to be an amazing sci-fi movie, and then turned into a lame desert movie. I have long said that there is a point in the movie where you can feel the actual turning point from "hey, this is cool" into "holy crap, this sucks!"

That said, if you take what the movie might have tried to do and combine it with the ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 that followed, then you have something. Perhaps the movie should not have been about the discovery of the gate or the things on the other side of the portal it opened, but somewhere in the middle. Regardless, Stargate SG-1 (and the Atlantis spinoff) have become one of the few things I look forward to on TV these days.

And so, of course, they're cancelling it. more

Insidious Sinus

The squeamish may want to skip my gruesome detailing of this morning's events. Just warning you now that this post isn't the usual whimsical philosophical riddle.

I haven't had much of a will to do anything lately, mostly because I have once again come down with the dreaded sinus infection.

I keep telling Berta that I should have my sinuses removed, but a sinus is actually a body cavity, meaning that it's an empty space. And how do you remove an empty space? Pack it with chewing gum, I suppose....
