I’ve had some billing issues with RegisterFly that have been causing havok with my domains.

Basically, I signed up for hosting services with them at the beginning of October because my Server4You dedicated hosting was not meeting my expectations, and I just wanted somewhere small and reliable to host some sites.

They didn’t tell me that the account wouldn’t be set up immediately until after I had paid them, instead saying that it would take 12-24 hours. Fine. I waited 3 days, and then sent them email telling them to cancel the order, since I had received no server details and had already contracted hosting elsewhere. You think that would end it?

No, I received another bill at the beginning of November. I sent email to the addresses in their “We received your payment” messages, I called their supposed “24/7” support line and got no response in any avenue.

Finally, I got a support ticket to be answered on their web site. They failed to understand that although every other message had gotten through, I never received my login information for the server. I wanted a refund and a cessation of recurring fees.

I didn’t get my refund because, even though I could not possibly have used their service during those two months and there is no evidence that I did, my case did not qualify for a refund. So I called up my credit card company and had those charges reversed.

Foolish me didn’t transfer the domains I also had registered with them.

So I’ve now had to pay money I shouldn’t have to have my “account” reactivated, even though they have the money for the domains I registered - I did not reverse those charges. And while I suppose that it’s within their purvue to do what they did, it’s a horrendous business practice. Done even without notice.

Moreover, I’ve gleaned through my dealings with the company that they are basically two people in a hut. It’s the reason why their service is so poor - they don’t really employ enough people to ensure that at least one of them is competant. This is the kind of thing that you need to look out for when you’re trying to acquire hosting but you can’t really learn until you’ve had to deal with this kind of issue.

This doesn’t reflect well on eNom either, who offers the services that RegisterFly resells. That they would condone these practices by one of their resellers reflects poorly upon them.

So all of the domains are now transferred to GoDaddy. Not that I know anything more about them, just that I know they’re bigger than two barely-English-speaking guys in a hut in New Jersey reselling eNom services.
