My work boss has always complained about the necessity for BJ’s to post someone at the exit to “verify” your checkout receipt. He’s right - they don’t compare what you’ve got with what is on the receipt. And it never really bothered me before, but it’s starting to get on my nerves.

Not all the time, but usually, they’ve got some toothless dude standing at the exit with a holepuncher waiting to “verify” that the goods that I’ve purchased are the only ones that I’m walking out with. It’s stupid. They don’t even check. How do I know?

I’m somewhat embarassed to say that one time while checking out, something rung up very, very wrong, and I didn’t bring it to anyone’s attention. Actually, I was doing self-checkout (which is another peeve of my boss’, who asks why he should have to do this work himself, but I digress), and I think I had scanned a DVD or something (usually around $20) and it came up as children’s underwear or some such ($6). My weak justification for not correcting this issue is that I was in a hurry, and it wasn’t my error; I wasn’t trying to scam anyone.

The guy at the door didn’t ask me where my children’s underwear was. He just looked me over, looked at my receipt, looked at all of the crap that I had bought, and punched my receipt. What is this the value that we’re getting from this guy apart from a bit of privacy violation?

It’s like scanning people at the airport. If I really wanted to get something on a plane that I wasn’t supposed to, I could. It’s all kind of pointless against the committed, even if it serves as an effective enough deterrent for the tempted. I just wonder how many people are tempted to steal stuff from BJ’s.
