I often stop at CVS on the way into work to pick up something to drink or an unnutritious breakfast item. I always get change. Usually, the change makes it all the way into my office, but I get annoyed by the weight and sound of it so I’ll dump it out onto my desk somewhere.

After a while, the change started to pile up. I consolidated most of it into an area on my desk and kept adding to it. There was quite a pile.

Last week, I decided to take it to the bank with my normal payroll deposit. So I gathered everything up into a paper cup and carted it to the bank.

Fortunately, our bank, Commerce Bank, has a free coin counting machine for its customers. I loaded all of the change into the machine. During the process, it asks you to guess the amount, and if you guess within a certain range, you get some kind of prize. Well, I missed the range by 3 cents. Drat.

Anyhow, last weekend we dumped the giant plastic Coke bottle that we use to hold change at home into an empty instant potato bucket. The bucket held, but it was pretty full. Berta and Abby took the coins to the bank and went through the same process, and now we have over $200 in spending money for our trip next week. Yay!
