I don’t remember what we were doing exactly, perhaps moving things in the front door from outside. Berta came out back and told me that there was a huge spider on the doorbell.

I really think this spider was trying to solicit something, because he was perched atop the doorbell wondering what to do next.

We get a lot of spiders around the house, most of them benevolent, but the girls aren’t too keen on them when they get so close to the house. I think this particular spider was the one who had formed his web across the front of the living room window. It would have been great as a Halloween decoration, but perhaps not so great for catching bugs.

His new vacation spot on top of our doorbell was probably good for scaring away the bible thumpers and politicians, but certainly wasn’t good if you wanted the girls to pass in and out of the front door without fear.

And so I was given the task of removing the creature, and - as is always the case with these things - you’d rather have them dead than escape to somewhere even more unpleasant than where they started. So I squished him. May this serve as a memorial to our fly-eating friend, and may he rest in peace.
