On Halloween morning, Berta, Abby and I went out with Dan, Dawn, Kerri, and Aidan to Linvilla Orchards in Media. It’s a pretty neat place, and a good fall trip for the festivities they had planned.

It looked pretty busy for Halloween morning, but I’m not sure what their usual traffic is on the weekends. It seems like the kind of place that could get a good crowd even when it’s not a holiday.

First, we all went to the animal pens. Linvilla is home to many animals, including sheep, goats, deer, geese, and chickens. There are feed despensers around the farm area for getting corn to feed to the animals. Kerri (and Dan!) was pretty into the furry animal feeding, but Abby didn’t really get into it until she could throw corn into the chicken coops.

After the animals, we stopped at the barbecue pit for lunch. They had a good selection of barbecued foods. The ribs looked pretty tasty. I had a BBQ pork sandwich (this is uncharacteristic of me) that was pretty good, along with some fried mushrooms, which were really good. Kerri and Dawn shared some potato chips that I watched the workers make.

They basically attach a potato to a drill, then drill it into a blade that slices it into a thin, long coil. Two potatos produce coils that fill up a bowl, and they fry them in a big clump just like this to make the chips, which come out of the oil in a bowl-like shape. Pretty cool.

After lunch we hung out at the play area. It was a little muddy, but the kids found stuff that wasn’t too dirty to play in. Kerri helped Abby get around pretty well, since most of the stuff was for older (5+) kids.

There is a fairly large play area there with quite a few differnt wooden playsets. One of Abby’s favorites was the hay barn, where you dive from a high ledge into a bin of loose hay. She came out of it very hay-covered.

There was also one enormous playset with all sorts of hanging, climbing, and sliding things. I don’t think Abby could have done it very well by herself, since she’s been getting scared of these sorts of things lately (for no reason). But with Kerri’s help, she went down the big winding slide many times.

After the playground, we stopped for orchard treats like carmel apples. Berta couldn’t have any of that, since she’s still pregnant, but she took some bites of the cider donuts I bought. I also got a fresh lemonade that was really good.

Abby spent this time trying to lick the cormel from her apple, and when she finally bit into it and tasted the apple, she had had enough. Her apple only had a tiny little bite mark on it.

When everyone had had their fill of carmel apples, we headed out. I think everyone had a nice time, and wouldn’t mind doing something again next year, or sooner. XMas Train, anyone?
