Well, it really wasn’t the other side of the world, just the country. But my favorite vacation was when we went to visit my Aunt in Medford, MA when I was ten years old.

It was my first time in a plane and I just had to sit by the window to see everything. The pilot told us we were going over the Grand Canyon and I couldn’t believe it. It looked so little! Just a line drawn on the earth from way up there. The entire country looked just like one of the relief maps we got in school, the ones with green and brown and various shades colored to represent he many types of land.

And then we landed and there were cobblestone streets in the city. When we got out to Medford, there were trees and lawns and deer. My cousins had a forest for a backyard in their house in Connecticut. It was so quiet at night and so dark. My Aunt’s house was old (as such things go this side of the pond) and creaky and she let my little brother and I sleep in the attic. I was sure there were ghosts and it was thrilling!

We played tourist. There was Lexington Green and Old Ironsides, Boston Harbor and Louisa May Alcott’s house. We saw my grandfather’s elementary school and the house he grew up in.

That was when I first knew that if I decide to move and leave Los Angeles, I’m headed to Boston.

Happy FFAF!
