One of the more interesting “perks” of working from home is that I get to take Abby to Kindergarten in the early afternoon.

Just around lunch time we start our procession. Actually, the most painless part of the production is getting Abby ready, which one might expect to be the most difficult part of the process. Abby is actually very helpful in the process, and has yet to complain about going to school. Give her a year or two, right?

With getting out of the house and into the car complete, it’s next a matter of getting to the school. As Abby says, it’s not very far. It only takes a couple of minutes to get there, and it’s nearly a straight shot from the house. But when we get there, that’s when the trouble starts…

They’ve got this weird system of having to line up to drop off kids. There’s this weird underpass that has a section of the school that goes over top. Cars pull up under this underpass three or four at a time, and two teachers help unload the kids.

This all sounds good, but it’s a weird process. Today, for instance, I drove Abby to school and waited for 15 minutes past when school was supposed to start before they started unloading. I’m not very ecologically minded, but that’s a big waste of gas.

Also, it’s weird that they prefer to unload only on the left side. I’ve put Abby’s car seat on the right side because if I parallel park legally (with the right side of the car against the curb), then Abby can get herself out of the car and onto the sidewalk without me having to worry about traffic. But the kindergarten likes her on the left side. This seems inherently unsafe, even if she is unloading for kindergarten fairly frequently.

I understand that the buses all let their kids out on the right side (for exactly the reason I mentioned), and so the right lane of this underpass is reserved for buses. The whole thing is a bit screwy if you ask me, but I can’t think of a better way to do it.

Anyway, one of the additional perks of dropping Abby off is that I’m forced to be out of the house at lunch on two out of five weekdays, and so I can pick up a sandwich or something. Today (right now, actually) I stopped at Stadium Grille, which has very tasty hamburgers. Today’s burger is the “Rebecca Burger”, which has sweet peppers, BBQ sauce, and swiss cheese. Tasty.

So, I’m going to finish my fries and head home during my “enforced” lunch hour. Considering the volume of work to do for work today, this is a significant indulgence. Yesterday’s hours spent on work: 14.
