It’s been a long time since I wrote anything about politics. This is mostly because every time I do, I feel like I’m going to have to be hospitalized for high blood pressure. Nonetheless, here I go softly…

I didn’t watch it.

I was busy doing other things. I don’t remember exactly what. Maybe feeding Riley, maybe catching up on the backlog of Gilmore Girls that has been piling up on the PVR while I wasn’t looking. (Incidentally, if you’re not watching Veronica Mars, you need to start right now.)

I didn’t realize that there was a broadcast until I tried to do some fancy stuff with the recording for The West Wing this morning, and helf of the stuff I was trying to record was labeled “State of the Union”. So I guess that if I wanted to watch it, I can. Instead, I thought that I would get a summary of it on news radio this morning. That didn’t happen either.

Actually, today the big news story - as it has been for the past week - is the Eagles in the Superbowl. And I’ll admit to being as excited as any other non-fanatical suburban Philadelphia male (there were kids at Abby’s school this morning with Eagles’ jerseys and died green hair - three-year-olds!), but that’s not all that’s news. I mean, this is the reporting of the state of our country we’re talking about.

I tried looking for a transcript of the speech on the web. Even that was difficult. I suppose I should have searched news outlets, but here is an idea to ponder. Less than 24 hours since the speech, Google News doesn’t even list the thing as an item. Suffice to say, nobody cares.

I guess we all knew what Bush is going to say now – We need to support our troops. Learn to duck and cover [quicktime movie]. Maintain the American way of life. Update social security to help Americans save for retirement. Preseve a citizen’s right to own firearms. Give our kids the education they deserve. Blah blah blah.

Are we all too disinterested to care? Bah.
