Uncle Mike's police wallet and badge holderI’m looking for a new wallet. My beat-up Levi’s wallet is about done, and I figure I had better find something before it expires completely.

Criteria for selecting a new wallet include:

  • Made of leather
  • Preferrably a solid color, like black (Kangaroos, camo, paisley = no; small slogans, abstract designs, goat heads = maybe)
  • Bi-fold, not tri-fold, but...
  • Either an outside window or a flip-out ID containter
  • I prefer an integrated money clip.
  • No dedicated full-sized bill container, since I never use it anyway.
  • Room for a good number of credit/membership cards, say 15.
  • Either no closure, or a very tight zippered closure with outside access to essentials.
  • No buttons, No velcro.
  • Fits easily into front pocket.
  • No chain.

Seen anything like that?

I have found a few stores that have things that don’t look too bad. This one is kind of like the one I have now, but it’s got a bit of red, and doesn’t look like it has enough card space. These wallets are neat (you have to look at the extra photos to see what I mean), but they can’t possibly be sturdy enough for realistic use. Here’s one that’s kind of cool, but all that extra material for the bill container could have saved me some thickness. This one is probably the closest that I’ve seen to exactly what I want.

Choosing a wallet is like choosing a watch. It’s something you’re going to have to live with for a while, and probably will see it every day. I guess some people just go for functional.

Like, I’ve seen Dave’s wallet before (when he used to carry one), and it’s just a clutter of paper - receipts, cards, and very little cash - inside a nylon and velcro wrapper. On the other hand, a lot of guys just carry their stuff loose. Even other guys carry all of their neccessities in their old plastic college ID fold-over, which is fine, I guess, since it works, but mine fell apart ages ago.

For the ladies, I suppose that choosing a wallet is like choosing a purse. It’s not something that you really want someone else to buy for you, because it’s never quite right.

Still, I’m willing to take suggestions if you come across something interesting. For example, this wallet is nearly perfectly designed. (More photos.) Sadly, I don’t live in Sweden.
