Philosophically- Categories versus Tags

There are a handful of tagging plugins for wordpress that let you associate keywords (aka "tags") to your posts for indexing.

For the uninitiated, when you write a post using one of these tagging plugins, a new field appears in the editor that lets you specify tags that classify your post. These tags are gathered by other sites, like Technorati, and let you see all posts people have written that use the same tag.

So why is tagging different from using categories?

Some people would say it isn't any different, and I would say that they're outright wrong. But I say that because of how I segregate tags and categories mentally.

What we need is...

We need a nice stable server running Apache 2.0 and someone to call to keep everything from going wrong and when everything does go wrong. And then we need to move every blogger in Philly over from Blogspot to a supercool fresh WordPress install.  This is my dream as the Philly WordPress Meetup organizer visiting the Philly Weblogger Meetup.

Yes, that would be keen.

A question ...

When it comes to software, a group of us usually get together to purchase it. If we all pitch in to pay, is it stealing?

When it comes to music, we like to share. I used to love the old days of Napster because you could find almost everything. We made up a party game using old TV theme songs and downloaded a few CDs worth. The rules of the game were easy: When it was your turn, you could earn three points. One for naming the show, one for naming a character or actor, and one for acting out a scene from the show. It was a simple game but lasted for hours and hours because we had so much fun.
