The Fat Geeks versus The Thin Geeks

There sure are a lot of geeks out there. I’ve noticed that I’m dealing with a lot more thin geeks lately. I think that’s a good thing.

Thin geeks are usually thin. They are often young. They have grown up in an era where body health and business fashion are important and they tend to keep themselves well-kempt.

Thin geeks are often concerned about the environment and reducing or reversing our ill effects on it. They are often philanthropists and donate to charities because they believe in them.

Thin geeks aren’t often wealthy, but have a good retirement planned for themselves. Thin geeks know their stuff generally pretty well, but are blindered into thinking that their way is the only/best way to accomplish something due to their inexperience. Thin geeks will often tout Linux as the penultimate OS, and will often needlessly toil in ancient inefficient console-based editors just to increase their geek cred.

On the other hand, Fat Geeks are the ones who have been toiling in the basement since the 70’s trying to make the internet go.

Medical Consent

I had some blood tests done this morning, and filled out some forms giving conset to the testing lab to share their test results with my doctor.

Amongst the text of their permission forms was a paragraph saying something like the following:

If you do not wish to receive materials in the mail related to your health, please initial here: _____

Well, I mentally debated whether I wanted to receive this stuff via mail, and eventually settled on not receiving it, but I got to thinking about this on my drive home. How would the lab know what materials would be related to my health?

Stinking Noisy Computers

Ok, so my computer is making this awful, awful fan noise. No, just the normal fan noise, but I find it particularly irritating today. So to overpower the fan, I put in a music CD (mp3s) to play to drown out the whirring.

Well, the music starts up ok, but then I notice that my CD drive is whirring even more loudly than the fan. In fact, the music now has this low hum in the background, coming from the CD drive.

Blogathon 2005

I never officially posted about this, but I thought that I should since some people read only via feeds and might not have noticed the garnish on every page of the site.

Please join me on August 6th for Blogathon 2005, where I will be posting a new blog entry every half hour for 24 hours beginning at 9am EST to raise money for Scholarship America.
