I haven’t seen Berta in our bedroom in a while. I hope she doesn’t enjoy sleeping in the living room with Riley after he wakes up screaming in the middle of the night.

Last night was interesting. He just wouldn’t stop crying. It was the ear-splitting cry morphing into hoarseness. Around 2am I stumbled downstairs to the tune of one-month-old-alarm-clock. The eardrum-blistering wail had begun about ten minutes prior, and probably started as a mere siren much longer before that.

You go through the baby needs - diaper, food, comfort, attention - but it doesn’t always help. I picked him up and carried him for a while, which soothed him a little, but when I gave him back to Berta he’s start screaming again. Infer what you will.

Eventually he settled in and ate something. “Eventually” meaning after an hour or so. Eating always seems to relax him. He’s grown an inch over the past month.

I went back to bed and woke up earlier than I might have liked. I found Berta and Riley sleeping on the living room couch. Abby was there, too, when I was putting on my jacket to leave. Got to work on time.
