Well, I have no reason to expect that you would know I wear glasses. It's actually a very light prescription. You can barely tell that there's anything going on. At least, that's what I've been told by people who apparently have stronger prescriptions.
So I went to the eye doctor last week for a checkup (I figured I'd fit that in after all of my family doctor visits) which was a long time coming. I think my last visit was three years ago, because we were just on our way to Palm Springs. So I've been slacking.
The last time I went, I told the doctor that I might be interested in contact lenses, and we tried out a couple pairs.The lenses he gave me to try on the first week were not great. They really bothered my eyes. The second week of trial lenses were better, but still not perfect. I was under the impression that the solution was the culprit, but the doctor wanted just to change the lens to see if that would improve things.
Unfortunately, when I returned for my third visit, they did not have the lenses in stock that I would need, and it became too inconvenient to keep missing work to try on new contacts. So that was that.
This most recent visits, I told the doctor (a different doctor this time) that I might still be interested in contacts if I didn't have to keep returning to change things. So she gave me this brand-new product, still contact lenses, but made of a different kind of stuff. She also gave me a different solution to start out with.
Well, that was a marked improvement.
I wore them on and off for a week as my time would allow. Being somewhat of a newbie at the whole "put this in your eye" task, it actually takes a significant portion of already short time in the morning to apply the darned things. So there were a couple days I didn't wear them, opting for the glasses instead.Â
I returned to the doctor for the follow-up this past Wednesday, and she said everything seems to look fine. She wrote me a prescription for the new lenses, and I ordered a bunch of them. They should come soon. As it turns out, they are not cheap. Hopefully as this new type of contact becomes more popular, the price will come down. I somehow doubt it.Â
So I sit here writing this post with silicone things sitting on my eyes. My vision is fine, but the left eye is a little itchy. They seem to get that way after wearing them for a while. The doctor said something about deposits on the lenses, which I'll have to rub off using the "no-rub" cleaning solution. (She says that it's "no-rub" only if you leave it in the stream for 10 seconds, which is a total waste of solution.)
I think I will take them out for our trip to Johnstown this weekend, because I don't htink I'll be comfortable installing them in Berta's parent's bathroom. I'll just stick with the goggles for the weekend.
Oh, yeah... My prescription? Virtually the same as three years ago.Â
