When I get tired, weird things get stuck in my head. The soundtrack to Wicked had recently been plaguing me, for example.

Today, I have words stuck in my head. Odd words. I would like to share them with you. Hopefully this release will also free me of them to think of other things. I doubt it, but maybe in sharing others can join my misery.

synecdoche - sə-’nek-də-(ˌ)kē n. figure of speech in which a part is used to represent the whole or the whole for the part (i.e. “wheels” for “car”)

For example: In the monitor, I find the meaning of the word “synecdoche”.

kerf - ‘kərf n. cut in wood made by a saw

For example: My wood shop project has a kerf from where I slipped with the jigsaw.

Are these words that you use in casual conversation? No. So why are they stuck in my head?

Wanna know what else is stuck in my head? There’s this song. I don’t know the title or artist. A Google search will help me out because I can hear the lyrics quite clearly. It’s a song called “Stay Home” by a band named “Self”. It’s from the Shrek soundtrack. Uh, ok.

I suppose that playing the song isn’t helpful for getting it out of my head, is it? Here you go.

What gets stuck in your head?
