Yesterday was a trial as we attempted to do some not-so-serious house hunting in the nearly perfect weather. Why? Riley was in “scream continuously” mode.

It’s rare that he does this these days because mostly he has very specific wants and knows how to communicate them. For example, when he wants a bottle (when will he finally accept sippy cups??) he’ll say “Ba?” And when he wants his blanket, he says “Ba?” And when he wants to play with a ball, he says “Ba?” And even “Ba?” when its time for that bath he loves. It’s a very flexible word.

Also in his vocabulary is “Bu” for book and “Boo” for balloon. Oh, and there’s “Tee” for TV, and “Tee” for tree. “Ee” for ear. “Car-car” for car, because just one isn’t enough, or perhaps due to Elizabeth Mitchel, whose CD suggests that we “go ridin’ in the car, car”.

“sy” is common for oustside. “uh” for up. “ow” for down. “boo-boo” is very handy for bumps and bruises, especially when accompanied with the twisting index finger pointing to the injury.

“mamamam” for Berta. “dada” for me. “nana” for Nana. “Aaaaaaagh!” is for Abby.

Riley can also say (and I count this as his first actual word) “disgusting”, and know what it means. “Stinky” is pretty popular for diapering reasons, too.

Riley makes lion roaring sounds, which sound like clearing flegm from his throat, and a very good snake hiss. His monkey “ooh-ooh” is pretty good, too.

I think Riley’s favorite word is “uh-oh”. His yes and no are “uh-huh” and “un-uh”. These were in full fore during yesterday’s scream fest. At least the “un-uh” was .

He’s got a pretty decent spoken vocabulary for an 18-month old, I think. When he works out the kinks to the point he does have screaming days, I’ll be overjoyed.
