Meetup has added fees to their group memberships. I suppose they have to stay afloat somehow, but this is going to kill any group that’s just getting started. And to think I just sent a writeup to Lorelle yesterday about how great Meetup has been for the Philadelphia WordPress Meetup Group.

Well, it’s not all doom and gloom. Fortunately, as unwise as it seemed at the time, I signed up for an M+ membership at Meetup. It was only for three months, and expires in June. As a result, the group’s dues are paid until then.

Perhaps at the next meetup I attend, we can discuss the fee payment (because I’m going to be putting that money toward gas to get into the city for the meetup, honestly) or an alternative to using Meetup for our group.

Split over everyone who attended our last meeting, that amounts to more than $3 per person. Can I reasonably ask everyone to contribute that for maintaining the Meetup site? That seems a little daft to me.

Philly WordPress bloggers are welcome, as always, to comment here on the issue. Maybe I can set up a subdomain here or something to house the Meetup info. I’m sure I saw some software for this purpose out there somewhere…
